Preceptor Workshop for Nurse Residents - 1/20/2026
The Preceptor Workshop is designed to help registered nurses enhance their skills and knowledge to effectively precept and improve patient care. Participants will integrate the ICOACH model to foster collaboration and introspection, assess their emotional intelligence to manage interactions better, and review adult learning principles to tailor teaching strategies. The course will also emphasize effective communication strategies, focusing on feedback and conflict management to strengthen interactions with patients, families, and healthcare teams. By clarifying the roles and responsibilities of preceptors at Children’s National Hospital, the workshop ensures participants are prepared to deliver safer, more effective patient care.
Target Audience
Nurses who are currently in the Pediatric Nurse Residency program
Learning Objectives
- Integrate concepts of ICOACH model into the preceptor roles of socializer, role model and educator
- Assess personal emotional intelligence and personality traits to identify areas for improvement in managing patient and colleague interactions effectively.
- Apply adult learning principles and communication strategies to develop tailored teaching methods that enhance preceptorship and improve learner engagement in the clinical environment.
- Apply communication strategies to employ feedback and conflict management strategies
- Identify how to assess, validate, evaluate, and remediate learner competency
