The Preceptor Workshop is designed to help registered nurses enhance their skills and knowledge to effectively precept and improve patient care. Participants will integrate the ICOACH model to foster collaboration and introspection, assess their emotional intelligence to manage interactions better, and review adult learning principles to tailor teaching strategies. The course will also emphasize effective communication strategies, focusing on feedback and conflict management to strengthen interactions with patients, families, and healthcare teams. By clarifying the roles and responsibilities of preceptors at Children’s National Hospital, the workshop ensures participants are prepared to deliver safer, more effective patient care.

Learning Objectives

  1. Assess personal emotional intelligence and personality traits using validated self-assessment tools to identify development needs and enhance effective interactions with patients and colleagues
  2. Assess orientee learning needs, readiness, and baseline competency using standardized clinical and behavioral performance criteria. 
  3. Demonstrate and validate the integration of the ICOACH model within the preceptor roles of socializer, role model, and educator.
  4. Apply and validate adult learning principles and tailored teaching strategies that support orientee engagement and clinical skill development
  5. Evaluate orientee performance using objective observation, feedback data, and competency validation outcomes
  6. Apply communication, feedback, and conflict management strategies to evaluate learner profession and determine readiness for independent practice
  7. Develop and implement individualized remediation plans based on identified competency gaps
  8. Reassess learner competency following remediation to confirm safe and effective clinical practice.
