Overview

The H/O Essentials course provides the oncology, hematology, palliative care, blood marrow transplant foundation of knowledge for the nursing care of children, adolescents, and young adults with cancer and blood disorders for new RNs. The lectures provide an overview of disease specific content and process, chemotherapy administration, and nursing considerations. Experienced CCBD RNs taking the CPHON exam benefit from a review course, contributing to greater confidence and higher pass rates in CPHON exam. All attendees will receive CNE credit in pediatric Hematology/ Oncology, which are required to take the CPHON exam. The Hematology/Oncology Essentials Core Curriculum will help CCBD move toward a 75% certification rate of eligible RNs.

Learning Objective 1: Discuss the concept of pediatric palliative care as quality-of-life support for children living with life-threatening illness

Learning Objective 2: Discuss implications for the transition to end of life care

Learning Objective 3: Discuss the special aspects of the role of the nurse in the care of the child or adolescent and their families throughout the trajectory of their illness.
