Medical Staff Leadership Education Seminar
Course Description:
This training provides a comprehensive overview of the structures and processes that drive effective medical staff governance. Participants will explore the interconnected roles of the Board, Administration, and Medical Staff in credentialing, privileging, and peer review. The session highlights common challenges in initial appointment, reappointment, and clinical privilege decisions, offering practical tools to strengthen credentialing workflows. Attendees will examine factors that commonly hinder peer review and learn strategies for fostering an organized, constructive, and solutions‑oriented process. The training also covers the appropriate use of collegial intervention and progressive actions to address concerns related to clinical competence or professional conduct. Additional topics include meeting key federal and local reporting obligations and developing bylaws language that mitigates risk in areas such as threshold criteria, waivers, misstatements, omissions, administrative relinquishments, and multi-hospital actions. This session equips leaders with actionable insights to enhance quality, safety, and professional accountability.

Learning Objectives
- Identify, discuss and gain a working knowledge of the relationship between the Board, Administration and the Medical Staff in terms of credentialing, privileging, and peer review;
- Identify common credentialing issues relating to initial appointment, reappointment, and granting of clinical privileges;
- Implement practical tips and tools to significantly enhance the effectiveness of the credentialing process;
- Identify those elements that commonly impede the peer review process, as well as practices for an organized, constructive, effective peer review process. Effectively utilize collegial intervention and other progressive steps when attempting to address issues relating to a practitioner’s clinical competence and/or professional conduct. Gain a better understanding of the reporting requirements to satisfy federal and local requirements; and Develop bylaws language that addresses key problem areas including threshold criteria and waivers, misstatements and omissions, administrative relinquishments, and the implementation of certain actions in related hospitals.
