Anthony R. Artino, Jr., PhD, is Professor of Health, Human Function, and Rehabilitation Sciences and of Medicine at the George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine and Health Sciences. He also serves as Co-Director of the GW Academy of Education Scholars and Co-Director of Research in his home department.

An educational psychologist by training, Dr. Artino’s scholarship focuses on improving the quality and rigor of research in medical and health professions education. His areas of expertise include questionnaire design, quantitative research methods, validity and measurement, and learner motivation and self-regulated learning. He has extensive experience mentoring faculty and trainees in designing, conducting, and publishing educational research, and his research has been extramurally supported the American Medical Association, the Association of American Medical Colleges, and the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs.

Dr. Artino has published more than 300 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and co-edited a textbook on survey design. He serves as Deputy Editor of the Journal of Graduate Medical Education and sits on the Editorial Board of Academic Medicine. Before joining GW, he spent 23 years in the U.S. Navy, retiring as a Captain in 2020. While on active duty, he helped create the Center for Health Professions Education at the Uniformed Services University. Dr. Artino is a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association, the Association for Medical Education in Europe, and the Aerospace Medical Association.

Dr. Artino lives in Gaithersburg, Maryland with his wife and four children. When not at work, he enjoys downhill skiing with his sons and playing pickleball with his friends.
