Janice Key, Distinguished University Professor of Pediatrics

Dr. Janice Key is a Distinguished University Professor of Pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina, specializing in Adolescent Medicine, with a joint appointment in Psychiatry. Dr. Key opened the state’s first school-based health center in 1994, now part of MUSC’s network of school-based health centers, all of which include telehealth. Her work within schools led to other health and wellness efforts including co-chairing the Charleston County Medical Society School Health Committee for over 30 years and serving as the medical consultant for the Charleston County School District school nurses (including a VFC program for the district). Her efforts to improve students’ nutrition, physical activity and mental health led to development of an implementation method, the School-based Wellness Initiative, and establishment of the MUSC Boeing Center for Children’s Wellness in 2010, with expansion to develop a school-centered mental health prevention and treatment framework in 2021. Awards that Dr. Key has received include the MUSC Distinguished Service Award (2004), MUSC Foundation Population Health Award (2019), The SC School Nurses School Health Service Award (2019-2020), the SC AAP Career Achievement Award (2021), AAP Special Achievement Award (2024), and Audrey’s Children Award (2025).
