Erica Salter, PhD, HEC-C

Dr. Erica Salter is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Health Care Ethics at Saint Louis University, where she has also served as Director of the PhD Program in Health Care Ethics since 2014 — making her one of the leading figures in graduate-level bioethics education in the country. She has a PhD in health care ethics, a Healthcare Ethics Consultant-Certified (HEC-C) credential and serves as Co-Chair of the Ethics Committee at Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital, as well as a consultant at Ranken Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital, bringing her scholarly expertise directly to bear on the clinical ethics challenges that arise in the care of seriously ill children. Dr. Salter's research focuses on pediatric decision-making, the best interest standard, the role of parental reasoning, and the ethics of suffering — and she has published widely in leading journals including Pediatrics, the Hastings Center Report, the Journal of Medicine and Philosophy, and the American Journal of Bioethics. She led a major, nationally funded consensus-building project — Best Interests and Beyond — that brought together pediatric ethics experts from across the country and resulted in a landmark consensus statement on standards of pediatric decision-making published in Pediatrics in 2023. A sought-after speaker at grand rounds and ethics conferences nationwide, Dr. Salter brings both philosophical depth and practical clinical wisdom to some of the hardest questions in pediatric ethics.
