Aaron Levy, PhD, MPhil

Aaron Levy, PhD, MPhil is the inaugural Director of Health Humanities Initiatives at Penn Medicine and a Senior Lecturer in English Literature and the History of Art, Senior Fellow in the School of Social Policy and Practice, and Adjunct Assistant Professor in Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Pennsylvania. A scholar of contemporary art and literature, his work focuses on the intersections of visual culture, medicine, and social practice, exploring art, ethics, and the poetics of care. An advocate for integrating the arts and humanities into healthcare, he directs the Penn Medicine Listening Lab, an innovative program supporting patient and care team wellbeing that has produced over 100 stories that have been accessed more than 50,000 times across seven hospitals. He has co-edited multiple publications on art, social suffering, and well-being, including On Listening as a Form of Care (2020), On the Poetics and Politics of Health (2021), The Language of Care: Stories from the Penn Medicine Listening Lab (2021), and Rx/Museum: 52 Essays on Art and Reflection in Medicine (2022). He has taught extensively at the University of Pennsylvania across multiple schools and departments since 2002, as well as in partnership with the Barnes Foundation, and has organized several major exhibitions and hundreds of public programs locally, nationally, and internationally. He serves as the Executive and Artistic Director of Public Trust, a Philadelphia non-profit that educates and raises awareness about urgent social issues.
