Broaching Culture: Naming the Unspoken in Therapy and Research

Washington, DC US
December 5, 2025

The goal of this activity is to strengthen psychology faculty’s ability to engage in culturally responsive care by effectively broaching topics of race, culture, and identity within clinical, supervisory, and research relationships. Faculty need to move beyond conceptual awareness toward application of material. Psychology faculty, both as evidenced on a broader scale in the literature and self-reported within our direct faculty, need guidance on how to initiate, sustain, and repair these conversations in real time. By improving comfort, confidence, and skill in broaching, participants will be better equipped to build stronger therapeutic alliances, model culturally responsive supervision for trainees, and ensure that care and research practices are attuned to each patient’s and family’s cultural context. These skills will serve psychologist well in enhancing trust, communication, and patient safety within pediatric behavioral health care.
