Doris Estrada, MD

D. Elizabeth Estrada, MD, is a pediatric endocrinologist at Children’s National and Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at George Washington University with over 30 years of experience treating children with diabetes and other endocrine conditions. DR estrada treats patients with all endocrine conditions but the focus of her pediatric endocrinology career has been the prevention and treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents. She is the Director of the type 2 diabetes program and the multidisciplinary Prader Willi Clinic.
She started her career at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center where she developed the Type 2 Diabetes Program and the Pediatric Obesity Center.
Subsequently, Dr Estrada served as Division Chief at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she developed a type 2 diabetes clinic and an obesity comorbidities clinic.
After joining Children’s National in 2019, she developed the multidisciplinary Type 2 Diabetes Program which include a team of physicians, psychologists, diabetes educator, nutritionists, physical therapy and social workers.
Dr Estrada is also leading the multidisciplinary Prader Willi clinic where patients with this condition received specialized care by multiple providers, including genetics, pulmonary, endocrinology, psychology, nutrition and diabetes education. (Note: I recently started this clinic because I noticed there was need for a “home” for these patients. There are not many multidisciplinary Centers in the country)
She has also conducted and collaborated in several research studies in the fields of insulin resistance and exercise intervention in adolescents with obesity and type 2 diabetes, Sha has participated in multicentric NIH and industry sponsored studies looking at genetics, pathophysiology and treatment of type 2 diabetes in children.
Dr. Estrada holds board certification in pediatric endocrinology, is the recipient of several honors, grants and awards, and is an active member of the Pediatric Endocrine Society, including the type 2 diabetes and the obesity special interest groups.
Dr Estrada has had the opportunity to educate and mentor many junior faculty and fellows, who have contributed in different ways to the field of pediatric endocrinology in her role as pediatric endocrinology fellowship director at Connecticut Children’s 2004-2014 and at UNC 2014-2019.
Her goal is to provide high quality care for children with endocrine conditions and diabetes and to improve access to care for children with type 2 diabetes and Prader Willi syndrome.
