Sonia Walia has over 15 years of experience responding to complex humanitarian emergencies and natural disasters, including South Sudan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Myanmar, and Indonesia. She supports humanitarian health through technical leadership, expertise, and experience. At her time at USAID, she supported responses in Gaza, Sudan, and Yemen. She was also on USAID's COVID-19 Task Force. During the West Africa Ebola Outbreak, she served as a Team Lead in Sierra Leone for the US Government's Ebola Response Team, and deployed several times to support the Ebola Response in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2019 and 2020. While working for a humanitarian organization, Ms. Walia supported tsunami recovery programs in Indonesia and Sri Lanka, responded to floods and conflict in Pakistan, the conflict in Afghanistan, and Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar. Ms. Walia holds two Bachelor Degrees: one in Biology from the University of Georgia, and one in Respiratory Therapy from the Medical College of Georgia. She also has a Masters Public Health Degree from The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She has spoken on a number of panels, including the Polio Independent Monitoring Board, the WHO led Global High Level Technical Meeting on Non-Communicable Diseases, and the International Alliance for Diabetes Action. She also teaches multiple courses for the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Tufts.
