Joseph Shapiro, MD HEC-C

Joseph Shapiro, MD, is pediatric emergency medicine specialist and a clinical ethicists. After obtaining his medical degree at George Washington University and residency training at Children’s National Hospital, he completed advanced training in pediatric bioethics at the Children’s Mercy Bioethics Center and fellowship training in emergency medicine at Boston Medical Center. He holds the Healthcare Ethics Consultant-Certified (HEC-C) credential from the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH) in recognition of 400 hours of clinical ethics practice and mastery of the core competencies required to facilitate clinical ethics consults.
His academic work in bioethics focuses on surrogate decision making in emergency care, child maltreatment evaluation and crisis standards of care. His writing has been featured in Pediatrics and presented at the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities National Conference. As the Associate Director of the Ethics Program he supports the Director Vanessa Madrigal, MD, and the Senior Clinical Ethicist Christian Cintron in providing the hospital’s clinical ethics consult service and expanding ethics education for trainees, faculty and staff throughout the institution.
