Sarah Sumner, PhD RN CCRN OCN CHPN
Sarah Sumner (PhD RN CCRN OCN CHPN) began her practice as an oncology nurse in 2004. She entered the profession after witnessing incredible nursing care for her mother after a life-threatening cardiac event. Since then, she has been drawn to caring for patients with serious illness and at the end of life at both Huntington Hospital in Pasadena and Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California. She served as Clinical Education Specialist at Providence for 5 years, collaborating with educators across the system to develop transition into practice programs. However, at the beginning of the pandemic, Sarah moved from her educator role to care for patients in the ICU. Sarah is involved in several committees including: nursing research, unit-based council, mental & behavioral health workgroup, ethics committee, and CME committee. Sarah completed her PhD in nursing from Wilkes University in 2024. Her research interests lie at the intersection of serious illness and nurse well-being. Sarah has presented 5 posters at NNEC over the years and is grateful for this community that has advanced her knowledge of nursing ethics. Sarah’s interest in this topic emerged directly from her clinical practice that includes caring for potential and actual organ donors and their families. She is honored to participate today in this breakout session with her colleagues Joseph Raho and Jessica Rong.
