Kurt Schumacher, MD, MS
With clinical research that focuses on long term outcomes in children and adults who have palliated congenital heart disease, Kurt Schumacher, M.D., M.S., has contributed to the understanding and improved treatment of heart failure years after surgical treatment of congenital heart disease. His primary focus has been on complications of Fontan circulation, the final surgical palliation of single ventricle heart disease. His work also focuses on avoidance of heart failure and improving physical and psychological health and quality of life in children with heart conditions.
Dr. Schumacher is a member of the Congenital Heart Center at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, a world leader in the care of children with heart disease, where he is an attending physician, cardiac intensivist, and Professor of Pediatrics. At the Congenital Heart Center, he cares for children and adults with a wide range of structural heart disease and cardiomyopathies. He leads the Pediatric Heart Transplant Program.
He earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School. He completed his internship and residency at the University of North Carolina in pediatrics. He then completed fellowship in pediatric cardiology and advanced training in both heart failure/transplantation and cardiac intensive care at Mott. Dr. Schumacher then earned his M.S. in clinical research design and statistical analysis at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Since 2018 he has served as the Associate Director of the Congenital Heart Center’s highly active Michigan Congenital Heart Outcomes Research and Discovery (M-CHORD) clinical research unit. In 2019, he became the director of the Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Consortium (PC4) Analytic Center.
As an educator, Dr. Schumacher serves as the associate program director of the Congenital Heart Center’s fellowship program.
In his spare time, Dr. Schumacher enjoys spending time with his wife and 2 boys, most happily on one of the large or small lakes in Michigan. He is a passionate fan of the U of M Wolverines.
