Lecture Description:
Antimicrobial resistant (AMR) bacteria kill 35,000 Americans annually. Excess antibiotic use is a major driver of AMR. Antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASP) have been implemented to help improve the use of antibiotics. In this lecture, the historical perspective on antimicrobial use will be illustrated followed by the impact of ASPs on the use of antibiotics. The impact of collaborations and quality improvement on the success of ASPs will be discussed. Lastly, implementation science is a burgeoning field that will be shown as an important part of the future of improving antimicrobial use.
