CICU Practicum March 2026

The CICU Practicum is an immersive course where participants review common congenital and acquired cardiac conditions, attend multidisciplinary rounds, and apply diagnosis and treatment plans to simulated critical care transport scenarios. Learners will analyze and manage transport medication drips, practice DOTM protocols and procedures, and apply skills in packaging, transporting, and handing off critically ill cardiac patients.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants analyze common congenital heart defects and acquired heart diseases seen in the pediatric population; then apply the knowledge by attending multidisciplinary rounds to learn about diagnosis and treatment plans of the patient population common to the CICU setting. They apply the information learned in follow up discussion, including Xray review. Participants will identify and apply skills to patients with critical care transport concerns. 
  2. Participants will identify and analyze transport medication drips for cardiac patients. They will apply information from the diagnosis, assessments and treatment plans to simulate a transport patient, Including the medication considerations.
  3. Participants will examine DOTM protocol and procedures, including drip calculations,medication administrations and common procedures. They will apply learned skills to receiving, packaging, transporting, and handing off of care of a critical care cardiac transport patient, including equipment used for transport and procedures common while on transport.
