Robert Schmidt, Robert E. Schmidt, MD, PhD
Dr. Robert Schmidt is the Division Chief of Neuropathology at Washington University School of Medicine and Director of the Research Electron Microscopy Core Laboratory. He provides expert diagnostic services in neuro-oncology, neurodegenerative diseases, and neuromuscular disorders, with a particular focus on rare central and peripheral nervous system tumors. His clinical work includes high-complexity case evaluation, intraoperative consultation, and post-mortem neuropathology, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration to enhance diagnostic precision and patient outcomes.
Dr. Schmidt’s research has advanced the understanding of neurodegenerative processes, peripheral neuropathies, and the neuropathologic correlates of systemic disease. He has served as a principal investigator or collaborator on numerous NIH-funded studies and has authored over 170 peer-reviewed publications. He is also the creator of the Neuropathology Atlas, an open-access resource for clinicians and trainees that illustrates key pathologic features of common and rare neurologic diseases, including rare tumors. Through his editorial leadership and national service roles, Dr. Schmidt continues to shape the evolving standards of diagnostic neuropathology and education.
