Raven McLeese, BSN, RN, CPN, CPPS

Raven McLeese is the Nursing Safety Coordinator in the Department of Nursing Science, Professional Practice, and Quality. She is responsible for guiding the Division of Nursing in the advancement of a just culture of patient and nursing safety through the enculturation of national clinical standards and practices regarding the science of safety. Raven received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Howard University in 2009. After which, she began her tenure at Children’s National on the Surgical Care Unit. There she honed her clinical and leadership skills a preceptor. As a Pathway to Nursing Excellence Fellow, Raven learned the principles of healthcare quality and began focusing her career on enhancing patient safety through collaboration and professional development of the clinical nurse. In her current role as the lead of the RN Safety Champion Program, Raven uses a focus on safety to develop the champions as change agents, leaders, and advocates for safe patient care as well as staff safety. Raven is currently enrolled in the Master of Science in Nursing: Patient Safety and Quality program at Southern New Hampshire University. Raven’s future goals and reason for applying to this program are to provide well rounded educational, professional, and social support to new nurses navigating the new frontier of the nursing profession. Raven has a keen interest in ensuring that there is diversity in the nursing workforce. She feels that it is important for patients to see themselves reflected as professional and empathetic caregivers. One of Raven’s favorite quotes is from George Bernard Shaw – “Some people see things as they are and ask why. Others dream things that never were and ask why not.” She hopes to motivate new nurses to advocate and be empowered to ask, “Why Not?”
