Claire Thorne, BA (Hons) Oxon, MSc, PhD

Claire Thorne is Professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at the University College London Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health. Claire's research focuses on the epidemiology of infections with respect to maternal and child health, and she has conducted research on HIV, viral hepatitis, syphilis, SARS-CoV-2 and Zika virus. She has a long-standing interest in HIV and related co-infections, particularly prevention of vertical transmission, use and safety of antiretrovirals in pregnancy and health of children who are HIV-exposed and uninfected. Her research has involved observational studies and cohort collaborations across clinical and epidemiological networks in a range of global settings. She serves on technical working groups for the World Health Organization including the Regional Committee for Validation of Elimination of MTCT of HIV and/or syphilis in the WHO Europe Region and the HIV, Hepatitis and STIs Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Therapeutics Working Group. She is an Advisory Board member of the International Antiretroviral Pregnancy Registry and a Board member of the Penta Child Health network.
