Gisella Valderrama
I am a pediatric emergency medicine faculty member at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C. I completed my Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and earned a Master’s degree in Medical Education from the University of Cincinnati during my fellowship. As part of my training, I participated in the prestigious Quality Scholars Program at the James M. Anderson Center for Health Systems Excellence, where I received comprehensive instruction in improvement science, patient safety, healthcare delivery, healthcare policy, and healthcare innovation. This program provided rigorous methodological training in health services research and quality improvement (QI) methods, which has shaped my academic and professional trajectory.
As an educator and QI leader, I have developed and implemented a curriculum on QI science for the Latin American Pediatric Emergency Society. This initiative was successfully deployed across five countries, and four out of five projects I mentored—co-developed with local team leaders—achieved measurable improvements. I have also launched a new international QI initiative involving five hospitals in Spain, further demonstrating my commitment to promoting systems-level improvements in pediatric care globally. These experiences demonstrate my deep understanding of QI methodology, commitment to cross-cultural collaboration, and ability to lead impactful, sustainable changes across healthcare systems.
My work is committed to health equity and patient- and family-centered care. I focus on co-designing culturally responsive interventions with frontline clinicians, patients, and families to address disparities and improve healthcare delivery. By leveraging implementation science and QI frameworks, I aim to create scalable, sustainable solutions that meet the needs of vulnerable pediatric populations. As principal investigator, I bring the training, leadership experience, and collaborative approach necessary to execute this study successfully and contribute to meaningful improvements in child health outcomes.
