M&M: Disseminated Mucormycosis Following BMT for Beta Thalassemia

Learning Objectives:

  • At the conclusion of this lecture, learners should be able to apply the principles of evidence-based medicine regarding risks of bone marrow transplant in the setting of iron overload and transfusion-dependency.
  • At the conclusion of this lecture, learners should be able to discuss when to suspect mucor and the diagnosis/treatment of mucormycosis. 
  • At the conclusion of this lecture, learners will be able to identify risk factors for invasive fungal infection in the immediate post-BMT period and strategies to mitigate these risks.
