Debra Herrmann, DHSc, MPH, PA-C

Debra (Dee Dee) Herrmann, DHSc, MPH, PA-C, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physician Assistant Studies and serves as the Director of the SMHS Center for Faculty Excellence.
Dr. Herrmann graduated from The George Washington University Physician Assistant Program in 2001. After graduating, she participated in the National Health Service Corps as a Scholar, practicing in Outpatient Community Medicine in rural West Virginia. Upon returning to the DMV area, she worked clinically in Emergency Medicine, Urgent Care, and Family Practice. In 2010, Dr. Herrmann completed the Master Teacher and Leadership Development program at George Washington University, and in December 2017, she earned her Doctor of Health Science degree, focusing on adult education, from A.T. Still University.
At the GW PA Program, Dr. Herrmann engages in teaching, departmental and university service, and scholarly activities. She has held several leadership roles, including Associate Director of the Didactic Curriculum, Director of Clinical Education, and Associate Program Director. In 2018, she was appointed Associate Director of Engagement for the SMHS Center for Faculty Excellence. She became the Director of the Center for Faculty Excellence in 2021 and is also the incoming Director of the SMHS Master Teacher Leadership Development program.
Dr. Herrmann has received numerous accolades, including the George Washington University 2025 Morton A. Bender Teaching Award and the GW Academic Medical Enterprise Pillars of Excellence Award in 2024. Additionally, she was honored with the National Physician Assistant Educator Association Faculty Rising Star Award for PA education in 2011. From 2010 to 2016, she served as the mayoral-appointed chair of the PA Advisory Committee for the DC Board of Medicine, and she continues to advise the Board on PA practice and regulations in Washington, DC, as needed.
Her research interests encompass the transition to professional practice, professional identity formation, professional development and performance improvement, clinical reasoning, curriculum design and evaluation, and educational innovations.
