Theresa Laguna, MD MSCS
Dr. Laguna received her undergraduate degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of New Mexico and her M.D. from the University of California, San Francisco. She completed her Pediatric Residency and Chief Residency at the University of Washington and Seattle Children’s Hospital. She completed her Pediatric Pulmonology Fellowship training and obtained a master’s degree in Clinical Science at the University of Colorado. Upon completion of her training, Dr. Laguna was recruited to the University of Minnesota where she was the Co-Director of the Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Center and Director of the Pediatric CF Program. She was then recruited to Chicago to be the Division Head of Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital and Northwestern University School of Medicine where she also served as the CF Center Director, Director of the Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD) Center of Excellence and was a member of the Executive Committee in the Office of Faculty Development. Dr. Laguna was then recruited back to Seattle as the new Division Head of Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine at Seattle Children’s Hospital and is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Dr. Laguna has built her research career in early lung disease in cystic fibrosis (CF). Her NIH R01 and Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) grant-funded work focuses on early infections in the CF airway and the role of anaerobic communities in the development of lung disease. She is a national mentor for the CFF and serves on NIH and CFF grant review study sections. She has been recognized for her teaching efforts as an Outstanding Faculty Educator by pediatric residents five times. She is active in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives locally, regionally, and nationally. Dr. Laguna has been active in many professional societies including the American Thoracic Society where she has served as Co-Chair of the DEI Advisory Group, is the Chair of the Pediatrics Assembly and the President of the Pediatric Pulmonology Division Directors Association.
