Anastassios Koumbourlis, MD, MPH

Anastassios C. Koumbourlis, M.D., M.P.H. is Professor of Pediatrics (Pulmonology) at George Washington University, School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and Chief of the Division of Pulmonary & Sleep Medicine at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington DC. He received his Medical Degree from the National University of Athens, School of Medicine in his native Greece, and a Master of Public Health (Health Policy) from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. He completed residencies in Preventive Medicine and in Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins and St Agnes Hospital. He also completed fellowships in Pediatric Pulmonology & Pediatric Critical Care at the University of Pittsburgh/Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Prior to his current position he was in the faculty of the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Columbia University and of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine both in New York, NY. Dr. Koumbourlis is a member and has served in leadership positions in multiple professional and scientific organizations including the American Thoracic Society, (Executive Committee of the Pediatric Assembly), the American College of Chest Physicians (Chair of the Pediatric Chest Medicine Network), European Respiratory Society. He has been elected member of the American Pediatric Society and of the Society of Pediatric Research. His research has focused on the study of lung mechanics in health and in disease. His clinical interests include congenital lung & airway abnormalities, Interstitial and advanced lung disease, neuromuscular and skeletal disorders, sickle cell disease.
