Dr. Nino is a tenured Professor of Pediatrics at George Washington University and Associate Chief for Academic Affairs, Director of Sleep Medicine, and Director of Airway Biology Research in the Division of Pediatric Pulmonary & Sleep Medicine at Children’s National Hospital (CNH) in Washington, D.C. He has developed a research program focused on airway epithelial responses to viral infections in newborns and infants, addressing one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in this age group. Dr. Nino’s work specifically investigates children at high risk for severe viral respiratory infections, such as those born prematurely or with trisomy 21 (Down syndrome). His lab also explores how viral respiratory infections contribute to the development of obstructive sleep apnea in children. Additionally, he has pioneered pediatric-centered artificial intelligence tools for airway single-cell studies, neonatal respiratory data analysis, the prediction of severe viral infections, and the clinical assessment of sleep breathing disorders.
